Gymnocarpium dryopteris is a widespread but localised fern found normally at altitudes above 450m other ferns that may be present are Blechnum spicant, Dryopteris oreades, Athyrium filix-femina and Oreopteris limbosperma.
In Rodwell (ed.) (1992) it occurs in the U16a community and in Birks (1973) it occurs in the Luzula sylvatica-Vaccinium myrtillus Association.
