Found on the edges of lochs, rocky stream banks and ledges on sea cliffs. It is often badly grazed by deer.
In Rodwell (ed.) (1991a) it occurs as a minor component in the W5 community, however this community has not been recorded on Skye. In Birks (1973) it is recorded in the Luzula sylvatica-Silene dioica association.
