Locally common on damp rock ledges and in woods.
In Rodwell (ed.) (1992) it occurs in the U16a, U17a and U17d communities. In Birks (1973) it occurs in the Rhacomitreto-Empetretum, Luzula sylvatica-Vaccinium myrtillus, Luzula sylvatica-Silene dioica, Corylus avellana-Oxalis acetosella and Fraxinus excelsior-Brachypodium sylvaticum associations.
