Asplenium ruta-muraria is commonly found on mortared walls and also on basic rocks often with A. trichomanes and occasionally A. adiantum-nigrum. Frond size varies in proportion to the amount of moisture available; plants in moist, shaded positions are normally quite large whereas those in dry exposed situations can be very small. In Rodwell (ed.) (2000) it occurs in the OV39 community. In Birks (1973) it occurs in the Asplenium marinum-Schistidium marinum and Asplenium trichomanes-Fissidens dubius, Associations and as a part of the Limestone Pavement Community.
One point worth noting is that despite the intimate mixing of A. ruta-muraria and A. trichomanes that occurs on many walls on Skye the hybrid between them A. x clermontiae has never been recorded.
