Asplenium scolopendrium occurs on limestone pavements with A. ruta-muraria, A. viride, A. trichomanes, Polystichum aculeatum and Cystopteris fragilis. In hazel and birch woods it forms part of field layer along with Athyrium filix-femina, Dryopteris filix-mas, D. dilatata and occasional D. affinis and Blechnum spicant. There are places on Skye where these two communities merge i.e. Torrin and here A. scolopendrium can become locally abundant. In Rodwell (ed.) (1991a, 2000) it occurs in of the W9a and OV40 communities. In Birks (1973) it occurs in the Asplenium trichomanes-Fissidens dubius Association and as a part of the Limestone Pavement Community.
