Polystichum setiferum was first found on Skye by Stephen Bungard at Holm in July 2004. It was growing in a cleft in a cliff by the shore there was one large plant with two possibly three smaller ones growing nearby, in the cleft there was also Dryopteris dilatata and Polypodium vulgare. Subsequent investigation showed up to a dozen plants were growing along an eight metre length of cliff.
